It's strange. But why I believe full heartedly in reading the transformation as it occures, I prefer that the victim be oblivious to the change, and that the words 'changed' or 'transform' are never used, and that you are only able to tell of the transformation itself, by the sublime, then radical changes in the terms used in the narrative and POV. Sometimes it is more transparent than others, but it is when you are able to realize a transformation is happen, even when the narrative does not, that in my humble opinion is art.
