I had an epiphany a few years ago: "if and when the technology exists, real life will look like Second Life." By which I mean that, if they could, a lot of people would modify and customize their real bodies the way they do an online avatar. And from what I've been reading over the last year, the technology is more a question of when than if. This story is set in a future where that's come to pass, but it's still relatively new enough that the more extremely-modded "parahumans", like mers and furs, are rare and subjected to a lot of curiosity.
